to Schools, 2011-12!

At the heart of her book-signing tour, author Caroline Coleman Bennett visits children and teachers in schools throughout S.C. to promote all the Capital City has to offer.  Since her book’s unveiling in 2006, she has visited 30,000 students and teachers in over 100 schools – all who have enjoyed one or more of her three age-appropriate, educational and inspirational presentations.  Named the “Official Children’s Book of Columbia” by Mayor Bob Coble and a local bestseller by The State newspaper, Charley’s Columbia Backyard has fast become a favorite of children of all ages.

Menu of Presentations:

“Backyard Treasures(For K-2nd Graders):  Includes a book-reading, brief Q&A, Backyard Treasures show-and-tell (Each child is invited to take home a brown lunch bag and bring back something from their own backyards that he/she considers a backyard treasure.  Mrs. Bennett will call on 8-10 students to join her in the front for this Backyard Treasures show-and-tell.), and Backyard Artwork (Teachers who participate in the coloring prompt are asked to select their top 3 classroom finalists to be showcased that morning.)

“My City, My State(For 3rd Graders):  A book-reading and presentation that reviews  the state symbols and covers the places they may be visiting or already visited this year on field trips.  This session ends with Q&A.

“Sizzling Senses” (For 4th-5th Graders):  A writers’ workshop that concentrates on using all your senses during creative writing.  In this session, the author reviews a portion of the book and invites children to point out the descriptive writing she used.  She touches on literary devices – such as similes, metaphors and alliterations.  Finally, she leads an interactive exercise that allows children to participate in creative writing.

What’s Included:  Each of these sessions lasts 45 minutes and includes an Educators Packet of curriculum ideas, puzzles, writing/art prompts and more; Best of Columbia Packet, which contains field trip ideas; two Charley posters; “I Met Charley” stickers for each child; and a “Meet and Greet” book-signing session to give all students the opportunity to meet the author.  Cost:  Only $80 per session, plus $10 in-town travel fee or $20 out-of-town travel fee.  Three grade minimum required.
